St Moritz

You’ve got to love St. Moritz! When it comes to ski resorts it’s by far my favourite – there’s a beautiful town centre with some amazing restaurants and shopping, broad and gentle hills for ski-lovers and an exciting array of apres-ski activities.

St Moritz’s boasts some beautiful architecture – Badrutt’s Palace Hotel for one. Look out for its distinctive soaring tower, one of the hallmarks of the St. Moritz skyline. Suvretta House, which offers its own ski school amongst other things, also champions traditional architectural styles, and reminds me of a fairytale castle.

Hotel Kulm is another great option, situated beside the renowned ice rink I recently took my fearless four year-old to for the first time, while the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski has played host to princes, politicians and artists since the Belle Époque era.

Every year St Moritz hosts a number of sporting events. February sees the White Turf, a world-famous horse race where the frozen lake becomes the setting for a most exclusive event. The soiree offers gourmet catering, live music and fun for everyone in the family. Other sports like cricket and polo are enjoyed throughout the winter season.

Stating the obvious – St. Moritz is prime snow-sports territory, with a abundance of idyllic paths for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. For downhill skiing Corviglia has some great snowy slopes which are very wide and gentle for beginners. Corvatsch is great for adrenaline seekers but the black runs suit intermediate level skiers too, and the snow here tends to be soft and powdery right up until April. On our recent visit there were no queues for the lifts and many of the ski runs were virtually untouched.

What’s more, art lovers already know that St. Moritz has successfully positioned itself as a major player in the art world. Over the last few years numerous world-class galleries have set up second locations in this popular mountain region – one of my favourite being Vito Schnabel. So whether you’re skiing, shopping, sipping a steamy drink by a roaring fire or immersing yourself in its unique art collections, St Moritz offers it all.
