Portugal. Explore the Algarve

With Covid restrictions lifting slowly and with the vaccine rollout dangling a return to normality we’re all hopeful that we’ll still be able to pay a visit to some of our favourite destinations this summer.

Portugal has always been on my top list for a family holiday, and this time it didn’t disappoint. Here, you can be as busy or chilled as you like and easily stay clear of the tourist jammed spots, with different caves and beaches to discover, mountains to be travelled and lakes and waterfalls to explore.

We rented a villa in Albufeira for the most part of our stay and came to Pine Cliffs Resort for a couple of days.

The resort curls around the clifftops and offers one of the most panoramic views in Albufeira. At first glance it has a real wow factor as the resort is huge – covering an area of 72-hectares and is located atop the dramatic red Algarvian cliffs that overlook the ocean.

The interiors and the design are very traditional Portuguese, with its cobbled streets and orange and lemon trees. There are seven outdoor pools, an indoor pool and a kids’ pool. There are also nine restaurants offering fresh Mediterranean cuisine.

If you are a golfer, there’s a large course and a driving range. If you want to play tennis, you can reserve courts. There are also other activities on offer, such as cooking classes, yoga and bike tours, but with some recent restrictions which you need to check beforehand. Porto Pirata Kids Club is also available should you need some time off from the little ones! So, whether you’re after a romantic getaway for two, or an action-packed trip with the kids in tow, this truly enchanting resort is sure to tick all the boxes.

Algarve bucket list ideas

    •  Visit the Algarve Caves. One of the most beautiful and famous caves is the Benagil Cave. You can either get a boat directly from the Benagil Beach or go on a longer boat trip from either Albufeira, Portimão, Vilamoura or Lagos taking in more of the sights.
    • Go on The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail – the walk takes place along the top of coastal cliffs from Praia da Marinha in the east to Praia de Vale Centeanes in the west. It’s especially beautiful during sunset.
    • Go on an off-road experience with Safari Tour .
    • Eat in one of the best seafood restaurants Cais Ao Mar .
    •  Take the kids to ZooMarine – a fun theme park that combines various animal shows, theatre shows and water attractions!

Lastly, it’s worth noting that you are required to be double vaccinated to be able to enter Portugal, without having to do a 14 day quarantine on arrival and you do need a COVID‑19 PCR test if you’re over the age of 11, 72 hours before departure.
