Amsterdam: Not just for grown-ups

Everyone knows that Amsterdam is a place for wild weekends, hen nights and quick city escapes, but did you know it’s also a wonderful place to take the kids?

Here are our top 5 things to do with the whole family.

Find Nemo

The unmistakable silhouette of Amsterdam’s science museum is hard to miss as as you stroll through the city streets. Modelled on a ship’s bow, it was designed by The Shard architect, Renzo Piano. The space itself is vast – kids can spend an entire day here without getting bored, and the grown-ups can too! Nemo is brimming with hands-on fun, interactive exhibits and of course an endless array of information on science and technology. And while you’re waiting for the wee ones to wear themselves out, you can relax with a drink in the museum’s stellar restaurant, or take in the sweeping views from the roof terrace.

Take a boat tour

It’s hard to envision Amsterdam without thinking of canals. When the sun is shining, there’s really no better way to see the city than from its waterways. There’s no end of options available so shop around to find one that suits. You can choose ‘hop-on hop-off’ options so you can stop at the parks and museums en route, or pick a tour that let’s you wine and dine as you admire the passing scenery.

Park it

In a country as forward thinking as The Netherlands, it’s hardly surprising that the capital is simply awash with green spaces. The world famous Amsterdam Bos is an expansive forest park that has everything from boating to an organic goat farm. With its manicured lawns and huge outdoor terrace, Vondelpark is another great place to bring the kids. They can play in one of its various playgrounds, and in summer months why not take in one of their open-air concerts?

Get creative

Artists have flocked to the creative capital for generations, so it seems fitting to absorb your kids in a little of Amsterdam’s rich cultural history. The Van Gogh museum is a great place for parents, and on weekends they host painting workshops for kids aged 6-12, many of which are held in English. At just €7.50 per child, there are few better places to drop off the nippers for a couple of hours, while you peruse the masterpieces.

Eat! Duh

There is no end to exciting, family-friendly dining options in Amsterdam, but Lavinia is one place we always return to. They have some of the freshest seafood in town and are always accommodating to families. Pasta e Basta is another great night out. They dish up great bowls of pasta with a side of melodic merriment. Yep, your waiters will actually sing to you as they are serving. Be sure to book both in advance to avoid disappointment.
