How to wear menswear like a lady

With an increasing demand for unisex and gender fluid clothing, the boundaries between menswear and womenswear are more blurred than ever. But experimenting with masculine styling can go far beyond just boyfriend jeans and trouser suits. This season designers are mixing boyish tailoring with a little girly edge. Here’s how to wear menswear like a lady.

Invest in an oversized shirt and pair it with…well, everything. Crisp white or classic flannel will never go out of style. We love Yohji Yamamoto’s new season cotton shirt worn over a mom jean, or rummage through the charity shops for a vintage lumberjack number.

A slick tuxedo jacket is a classic way to harness androgynous chic. For a modern feel ditch super-slim and cigarette leg trousers and pair with a relaxed bottom like straight leg jeans. Golden Goose’s deluxe tux jacket features a striped lining that adds another layer of masculine cool when rolled up at the sleeves.

Men’s trousers, if styled right, can look both chic and unique. If you’re not feeling inspired by your other half’s closet, we suggest copping a pair of simple chinos from Uniqlo or Bassike, and cinching them at the waist with a chunky belt to create a paper-bag effect. Roll up the hems a few times and wear with summery wedges for the perfect fusion of tomboy and girly.

This spring mix two parts gangster and one part ladylike by donning a pair of embellished brogues. The timeless style has been given a contemporary update with bedazzled heels, glitter, plush materials and metallic trims. We love Nicholas Kirkwood’s pearly-heeled black brogues, and Marni’s gold and burgundy pair.

Finally, a boyish hat will keep the sun off your face in the most fabulous way! Sensi Studio’s straw panama hat looks glam from city to beach.
