Utility fashion makes a comeback

Here at Style’n’Snitch we recently swooned over 3.1 Phillip Lim’s latest collection and applauded its shift towards clean and understated luxury. Another key trend for spring is a return to utility styling. Think neutral palettes, loose-fitting shapes, military motifs, uncomplicated design lines, plenty of practical pockets, and you’ve hit the nail on the head.

Utilitarian doesn’t need to mean heavy-duty khaki – plenty of spring’s pieces feel fresher in shades of fawn and sand. Ganni’s desert-hued jumpsuit loaded with zippers shows exactly why the Copenhagen-based brand has done nothing but rack-up cool points since taking the fashion market by storm.

Saint Laurent is well known for its chic take on military-inspired styling and their cotton-linen blend jacket is the perfect example. The delicate sleeve embroidery and military feel will ensure you climb the fashion ranks.

Oversized silhouettes and subtle tailoring are the calling cards of London design duo Marques’Almeida. Their cargo-pocket jacket has a relaxed feel but cinches in at the waist with a belted buckle for ladylike sophistication.

If there’s one trend that’s going to be ruling the next few seasons it’s jacket co-ords, so pair yours with the brand’s matching shorts for ultimate power dressing prowess.

Also seen on their catwalk, these black, belted linen cargo trousers that are a little bit ‘90s grunge, a little bit badass empowerment. Pair with a loose-fitting shirt, chunky heeled sandals and your pick of stylish shopper for the perfect almost-summer city style.

SeeByChloé were also championing the trend in this fluid silk Saharienne jacket with an exaggerated collar and shoulder tabs. Adorned with a tonal ribbon fastening, the elasticated waistband brings gentle structure to the relaxed proportions while patch pockets complete the utility feel.

Looking to the high street there’s plenty to choose from there too. We love Topshop’s convertible camo trousers. When the weather heats up just zip yourself straight into cute high-waisted shorts – talk about practicality!
