The old and the new of Valentino

Call it a comeback but Valentino is definitely taking some inspiration from the 70s, bringing its multicolour V Optical Valentino archive pattern motif back in almost every design!

I’m in love with their recent Resort 2022 collection with their fun and easy going retro vibes!

Expect to see platform maxi sandals, colourful zigzag prints and babydoll tweed mini skirts.

While historically Valentino was known to appeal to slightly older crowd – think couture shows set underneath Paris’ gilded ceilings and celebrities in custom gowns – today the brand is really changing.

Its Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli said he wanted to bring together the tradition of The Maison with the street aesthetic, bringing more choice and versatility to its customers.

You can definitely see this in Valentino’s recent collections, bringing structured and beautiful tailoring to the relaxed yet totally luxe fits ideal for a work-from-home lifestyle, especially in the shape of its silk pyjama-suit hybrids, oversized shirts and cute separates which you can mix and match.

And it’s not just the brand’s commercial offering that’s changing, the Italian Maison is said to be undergoing some structural changes too. The Italian Fashion House’s spokesman said on Monday that the company reorganised its finance and operations structures into two distinct units to separate its business and control divisions, to better streamline the businesses.

CEO Jacopo Venturini was quoted saying: “Valentino is charting a new course for the future!” And “We are set on building together the next chapter of the brand, repositioning Valentino as the most established Italian Maison de Couture.”

Let’s see…

In a sector where designer “musical chairs” and radical aesthetic rebrandings are commonplace I’d love to see how these big changes actually materialise.

For now, I really just enjoy wearing Valentino.
