La Double J

While it continues to create innovative fashion that seamlessly merges the worlds of historical and contemporary styling, Milanese label La Double J has these days expanded into a fully-fledged lifestyle brand.

Founded in 2015 by journalist and vintage collector, J.J Martin, it grew from a shoppable online mag selling reclaimed clothing and jewellery, into a luxurious, multi-tasking market for new fashion, homewares and rare second-hand finds.

Los Angeles-born, Milan-based J.J. Martin spent close to two decades scoping out the best in Italian fashion and design as a contributing editor at Harper’s Bazaar USA, WSJ, and Wallpaper magazines, while her writing has appeared in T: The NY Times Style Magazine, Japanese Vogue, AD and Elle Décor.

Now, as La Double J’s creative mastermind, she converts her experience as a writer into discovering hidden fashion archives and curating lesser-known talents, while simultaneously bringing attention to many of Italy’s unsung manufacturers. Martin specialises in recreating historic prints found in the Mantero silk archive, which also supplies many of the country’s top-tier brands.

Initially Martin focussed on translating intricate prints onto a few simple, easy-to-wear shapes in fabrics like cotton and silk twill, but as the company enlarged, so too did its selection of silhouettes and materials. The AW2018-2019 collection represents a dazzling array of bold pattern paired with striking design – think elegant matching co-ords; multi-tiered, structured jackets in large-scale florals; flouncy peplums and bell sleeves; as well as all the floaty hemlines those who’ve been following the label have come to expect.

All of La Double J’s products – from its content, editorial projects and pop-up shops, to its product design and wildly decorated showroom in Milan—are distilled through a lens of pure joy, eye-popping print and a love of all things maximal.
