Words like “ethical” and “ecological” don’t always invoke visions of luxury fashion and high-end designs, but in recent years everyone from high street to haute couture has recognised the importance of sustainable fashion. This means that it’s easier than ever to find slick and stylish threads and accessories that make for a guilt-free spree. ASOS, H&M and Mango have all launched sustainable collections recently, and Stella has been advocating ethical for years. Here are five more brands you should get to know on your quest for eco.
1. Vitamin A – For sexy and sustainable swimming
With every item produced ethically in sunny California, and with many of their suits made from recycled materials, Vitamin A swimwear is as flattering on the body as it is sustainable. Unlike a lot of major retailers, Vitamin A uses waterless digital printing technology, chooses factories that conserve water and energy use, and they have an emphasis on treating their workers fairly.
2. EDUN – For cutting-edge and community-driven design
EDUN is an NYC-based label that aims to dress women impeccably while simultaneously increasing trade across Africa. Founded in 2005 by Bono’s wife and business partner, Ali Hewson, the brand has received mass critical acclaim for its modern aesthetics combined with a multifaceted approach to ethical business. EDUN works closely with African manufacturers, local artists and communities to strengthen trade in the continent.
3. Minna – For worry-free weddings
Self-described as an eco luxe brand, Minna make weddings easier. They produce beautiful, bespoke wedding dresses, veils and bridesmaids gowns from recycled, organic and locally-sources textiles – with everything made to order for the big day.
4. Mirabelle – For guilt-free gifting
With a host of celebrity fans that include Kate Middleton, Mirabelle jewellery is produced by fair-trade suppliers using quality materials from trusted sources. Founded by the daughter of a Persian silversmith, the brand merges ethnic and modern aesthetics to create beautifully handmade pieces with soul. Many of the designs are imbued with symbolism and ancient talismans, so they’re perfect as a personal pick-me-up or as a meaningful gift.
5. Dick Moby – For ethical eyewear
Born out of Amsterdam, this eyewear brand uses 97% recycled acetate in all of its frames (the other 3% is black ink!), and even their microfibre lens cloths and leather cases are made from reused materials.
