Don’t be a (Canada) Goose…

Canada Goose has enjoyed an impressive resurgence over the last few years, but the heavy-duty outerwear brand has also been known to polarise people. Some say it’s essential winter wear for cold climates, while others have set up blogs specifically to mock those that think warmth costs a cool £800. So is it worth the investment or are there wallet-friendly options out there that do the same job?

The Canada Goose Kensington Slim Fit Parka retails for £799.95 and claims to keep you toasty in temperatures as cold as -20C. While it certainly is effective at keeping hypothermia at bay, unless you live in a climate as harsh as this, you can undoubtedly find something similar for a smidge of the price.

If you’re looking for performance and durability, Canada Goose does offer a lifetime warranty, so you know they don’t skimp on quality. However, there are other companies out there with just as stellar a reputation. The bestselling North Face women’s Thermoball Parka, for example, offers the latest in heat technology and retails for just £215. Thermoball™ insulation mimics the high-warmth of lofty goose down minus the weight, while its water repellent finish repels the rain, making it perfect for the wet and wild British wintertime.

Beginning life as a Polar expedition brand, French brand Moncler epitomises functional luxury, and while their designs perfectly combine practicality with style, you’re unlikely to pick one up for less than a grand. The Khloe Padded Coat, available on FarFetch.com for £2437.41 is undoubtedly a good-looking item, but Herno has also produced a range of elegant down parkas for around half the price. Their Fox Fur Trim Padded Jacket also utilises goose down and fur but comes in at more appeasing price of £632.44. In the photo, I have opted for Rag&Bone piece. Originally from NYK they have been in UK for a while. Not only are they famous for their super fit jeans , but also funky parkas and down jackets.

And if you want even more bang for your buck, hit up the high street. Uniqlo showcase the latest in wearable technology, and their clean-cut ultra light down parkas retail for less than £100. Sure, you’ll forego the hip brand name and the luxury design lines, but it’ll certainly keep out the cold.

So what can we conclude from all of this? Of-the-moment outdoor brands like Canada Goose and Moncler won’t leave you chilly or disappointed, but unless you’ve got plans to jet off to Everest this holiday season, you’ll likely survive the British wintertime just fine without them.
