5 things we learnt from London Fashion Week

Ruffles are here to stay

One of last season’s biggest trends has been updated for another round. Simone Rocha sent models down the catwalk in gargantuan ruffles so big they cascaded to the floor, while Preen by Thornton Bregazzi experimented with asymmetric ruffles in pastel tones. Erdem and Marques’ Almeida followed suit, while Christopher Kane trifled in layers upon layers of multi-hued frills.

Hello yellow

Yellow stuck around, in every shade from pale lemon to deep ochre, with Molly Goddard showcasing bright tailored suit jackets, while Simone Rocha and Mary Katrantzou worked the colour into all manner of prints and patterns in the form of flowers, polka dots and Trompe L’oeils. The sunny hue flooded the men’s shows too, as seen in Berthold’s bold all-yellow outfits.

Sunnies are shrinking

Though it may seem like each and every Nineties fad has been covered by now, there’s just enough room in the market for the return of slim frames. Spotted throughout the year on influencers from Bella Hadid to Caroline Vreeland, LFW saw micro-shades rule the catwalks at Anya Hindmarch and Surpiya Lele, amongst others.

Royalty reigns supreme

Queenly style has taken the catwalks by storm, with nods to this unlikely fashion icon witnessed at Erdem, Simone Rocha, Christopher Kane and Mary Katrantzou.
Thistles, roses and leeks inspired by HRH’s coronation gown emblazoned Erdem Moralioglu’s collection, while Simone Rocha paid homage to Victorian-era dramatics in the form of billowing sleeves and ditsy florals.

Sequins aren’t just for Christmas

You’ll be pleased to know that your sparkliest numbers can be worn long after Santa’s been and gone. After ruling the runways at New York Fashion Week, London got a glitzy good time of its own, with sequins adorning models at Halpern, Molly Goddard and JW Anderson. Michael Halpern went for sequin-swathed going-out dresses, while JW Anderson worked shimmering panels into dresses and jackets.
