5 spring essentials every wardrobe needs

A belted trench

Nothing says spring quite like a trench or macintosh. There’s a reason this classic coat shape makes an appearance on almost every seasonal list – it’s a style that’s as timeless as it is stylish.

For elegance that’ll last a lifetime, a Burberry mac will keep those April showers at bay. Buy it in an easy shade of black, navy or beige to ensure you’ll always be en vogue. For extra style points, invest in a cheaper, on-trend option to keep you ahead of the fashion pack for a few seasons. We adore this belted, bronze trench from Acler, available at Modaoperandi.com.

A waterproof boot

Spring showers are pretty much a given at this time of year and nobody likes arriving at work with sodden tootsies. Invest in a pair that are as beautiful as they are waterproof, like Givenchy’s slick, black Eva rain boots or Dolce and Gabanna’s current season leopard print boots.

A clunky Wellie might not be for everyone, however. For the eternally well-heeled, there are more feminine options like Hunter’s sky-high Chelsea boots, which are a steal at only £140.

Opaque tights

We all know the British weather can flip flop faster than a pair of Havianas so a punchy pair of tights are a handbag staple at this time of year. Wear them in the mornings when it’s chillier, only to whip them off at lunchtimes for a spot of snappy impromptu suntanning.

Wolford is many-a-lady’s go-to when it comes to tights, and rightly so. The super-sturdy brand will keep you ladder-free till summer rolls around. Or, to make your ensemble all about the legwear, Dsquared 2’s printed tights make a bold statement paired with black.

A day-to-evening wedged sandal

Wedges are the footwear that just keep giving: they harness all of the leg-lengthening power of a stiletto minus the aches and pains, and the ultra comfy heel has conveniently stayed in style for years.

This season we are crushing on Jimmy Choo’s Porschia floral-embellished wedges, as well as Miu Miu’s vertigo-inducing patent sandals, both available at Matchesfashion.com.

A casual, throw-on dress

A sporty and simple A-line dress is flattering on almost every body shape and is perfect for pairing with your opaque tights and foot-friendly wedges. It should be able to transition easily from office to post-work party.

Delpozo does an adorable white number with red polka dots that’s great for the races or a Sunday bbq, or for something a little more serious, an Alexander Wang piece will never go out of style. We love this short-sleeved A-line midi that’s just as elegant with flats as it is with heels.
