3.1 Phillip Lim SS18 collection heralds a shift towards understated luxe

3.1 Phillip Lim’s SS18 collection sees the designer strip back his ideas with a disregard for anything overtly fussy. Speaking after his show last year, the label’s namesake supposedly cited flamenco dancers and ‘90s minimalism as (at least some of) his inspiration, and while both concepts seem vastly divergent, an eagle eye will pick up on the reference.

Asymmetric midi and maxi hems, ruffled blouses and clean, monochromatic tops are perfect garb for an indecisive springtime climate. In fact the majority of the collection sticks to single colour blocks, with the odd stripe and ditsy print thrown in for femininity.

We’re currently swooning over a pair of sporty tie-waist shorts in olive green – an easy staple for understated luxury this season. Pair with a crisp, white tee, or throw 3.1 Phillip Lim’s floral bomber overtop to complete the look.

As per usual, the accessories in the collection could stand alone.

Cute pouch bags and practical satchels and totes in easy-to-wear shades serve as straightforward investment pieces, while the shoes come in the form of beautifully crafted leather slingbacks with unexpected heels made from Perspex or wood.

3.1 Phillip Lim SS18 collection heralds a shift towards understated luxe

3.1 Phillip Lim has this season heralded the return to practical as opposed to novelty, which may serve as a breath of fresh air to some after seasons spent championing flashy trims and mammoth logos. Growing in maturity with each collection since the brand’s highly applauded emergence in 2005, simple, unpretentious and expertly crafted is exactly what we’ve come to expect.
