This season’s sports luxe trend is one that’s worth running for. Now well and truly embraced by the high-fashion pack, it offers refined design lines, modernism and perhaps most importantly, comfort.
No longer reserved for the athletes of the world, sportswear has enjoyed a spectacular resurgence. Wedged trainers, luxury bomber jackets and fancy jogging bottoms define the style that breaks all the rules: it’s now A-OK to don sneakers in the evening and joggers with your handbag.
And these days it’s not unusual to see the fashion-forward whipped into a frenzy over the latest activewear and designer collaboration.
Charlotte Olympia, Ricardo Tisci, Tim Coppens, APC, Olivier Rousteing and Cushnie et Ochs are just a few of the high-end brands partnering with sports labels, while celebs are also ensuring they get in on the action – think Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma collection, or Kanye West’s Yeezys for Adidas.

In fact it may have been Adidas who kickstarted this slow-burning trend some 13 years ago when they partenered with Yohji Yamamoto, ultimately creating the Y-3 shoe. Not long after, the brand’s game-changing Stella McCartney collab came about. While sportswear as fashion has been an evolving trend since then, 2016 sees it continue with conviction. The runways are awash with sleek minimalism and sporty silhouettes that blur the boundaries between style and convenience. We saw tracksuits from Botega Venetta and Tommy Hilfiger; luxury bomber jackets from Fausto Puglisi and Fendi; and clean-cut trainers by everyone from Marni to Alexander Wang.
Comfort has never looked so cool.
