The US election, implications for fashion

Making another day in history as Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president of the United States, we could not possibly stay impartial.

As the European intelligentsia is reeling from the election, and realising that just because all your friends agree with you doesn’t mean that everyone else does, I think it’s time to write some astute analysis of the election. Put simply, this is a victory for a small but important part of culture, namely fashion.

While I am pretty sure that most fashionistas will tear their coiffures out and send each other messages on snapchat about how they will emigrate to Canada, just take a look at the women involved. Is it so surprising that two perfectly manicured, well dressed women are now going to be on TV for the next four years? It boils down very simply to Melania and Ivanka, vs Hilary and Chelsea.

Now I don’t have a vote, and volatility is good for me generally, so I can’t help but be happy about the result. I hope that Melania as a former model will now start setting some trends and bringing some younger designers to the forefront. Today she mainly favours the high-end brands like Balmain, Gucci, Chanel and Valentino, but imagine all the possibilities that she has with all the upcoming social occasions to promote some younger faces, such as Adam Selman or perhaps even some Easter European names like Piotrek Panszczyk of Area. Melania, herself, is no stranger to being entrepreneurial , as she launched her own jewellery line in 2010 and continues to wow the public with her energy and style.

And while Ivanka has a bit of the dominatrix going on, she is by far the sneakiest bid of anyone involved in the election. Maybe the bid isn’t so sneaky actually on my part, but it is very deep. Maybe I would even defease it ( sorry about the bond joke). Anyway, I regard this election as a victory for stylish, Eastern European women, and who is really going to object to that? Sure they can be a bit materialistic, but they care about appearances and that’s what fashion is all about. There is a new first family in the White House, and guess what? They are HOT!
