Ladies across the globe are breathing a sigh of relief and finally letting it all hang out. Literally. Why? Because we’re no longer bound by the rules of the skinny jean.
This year’s unstoppable trend towards denim has brought us every shape, style, wash and trim, meaning female figures are finally being rewarded with a jean to suit every individual need. And lord only knows how different we all are!
While the skinny may have provided a simplistic and elegant go-to cut, its figure-grabbing slenderness and propensity to show every lump and bump, meant in reality it only suited about 5% of the female population.
Now we have the whole fam to choose from: the boyfriend who we just can’t seem to get rid of, the dad jean, and this summer’s biggest cut, the mum. Wide-legs will be sticking around till next season too, selflessly offering women their moral support in the form of bum and stomach-concealing volume.
Adorning rips, holes, embroidery, studs, patches and ruffles are everywhere, from Adriano Goldschmeid’s super-shredded boyfriends, to Stella McCartney’s botanically-inspired embroidery.

What women want now are cuts that enhance the figurenot cling to it, washes that embrace contours not hugthem, and trims that serve as fashion statements in themselves. These days there is truly a jean for everyone – and as someone who’s thigh-gap only exists during bouts of extreme sickness, there are few trends I welcome more!

Goodbye skinny jean. And good riddance!
