Shoulder Pads

Anyone with an eye for fashion will’ve noticed that there’s one 80s theme that’s back with a vengeance: the shoulder pad.

It’s a terrifying thought for some, particularly those who lived through it the first time round. But rest assured, this fad is more versatile than you might think. Here’s how to do shoulder pads in the 21st Century – without looking fancy dress.

Balance out those proportions

It’s no surprise that shoulder pads can make the wearer look top heavy, so be sure to balance out your proportions accordingly. Cinch in the waist with a simple belt and wear leg-lengthening bottoms to create shape. What is surprising, however, is that shoulder pads can work on lots of bodies – from svelte to curvy. Remember, a broad shoulder can actually balance out wider hips so don’t think this trend is only for waifs.

Keep it modern

Avoid looking like you’ve stepped out of Dynasty by carefully disregarding any other 80s trends that may also be en vogue. No big hair, no oversized earrings and no matching skirt suits please! Look for styles that add a sharp, clean edge so your statement is more architectural than it is quarterback.

Choose your fabrication wisely

When trying to find the perfect padded piece, pay careful attention to materials. Neons, brights, metallics and anything synthetic or shiny are over-elaborate and will look dated instead of modern. A sharp black blazer or a classic, belted trench with padded shoulders are the kinds of styles that’ll keep your look contemporary.

Go minimal elsewhere

If you’re going to do a bold shoulder, make sure that you keep the rest simple. Don’t over-accessorize and keep your hair styled in a slick, fuss-free manner to draw attention to your squared off shoulders. Monochromatic shoes and bottoms work best.

Choose the right height

If you’re already broad-shouldered you probably think this is one trend to avoid entirely. But not necessarily. If you’re wider on top choose a smaller pad that adds definition but not too much height. If you’re looking to add curves to your figure you can go straight for the more dramatic shapes.
