Mastering the autumnal palette

Earlier in spring, The Pantone Institute of Color mapped out AW17’s top 10 shades as seen at NYFW. Now that the leaves are falling, the days are getting shorter and we’re reluctantly replacing our summer dresses with woollens, it’s time to get to know this season’s warming and rich palette.

The list includes classic autumnal shades like Tawny Port, Autumn Maple, Navy Peony and Butterrum, as well as bolder hues like Golden Lime, Marina Blue and the resilient Ballet Slipper. Here’s our pick of this season’s best buys for each unique shade.

Grenadine

A cheery, dynamic red that continues to rule the catwalks, why not invest in a snug statement piece like MSGM’s double panel wool coat. www.farfetch.com

Tawny Port

Not dissimilar to a deep Bordeaux, this elegant shade is perfect for the party season. Saint Laurent’s plunging velvet mini will get you noticed at any soiree. www.matchesfashion.com

Ballet Slipper

An easy one to work into you wardrobe, this girly and elegant pink is great for daytime basics. Zara’s pale pink frock coat is an easy chuck-on over anything. www.zara.com

Butterum

This warming and toasty nude is perfect for warming and toasty knitwear, and Marc Jacobs has truly mastered this season’s palette. We love this turtle-neck sweater with gold detailing. www.marcjacobs.com

Navy Peonie

Rich navy rarely falls out of fashion. F.R.S’s navy pajama-style suit looks sleek worn as separates or a co-ord. www.farfetch.com

Neutral Grey

Easy-peasy grey is a staple in almost every woman’s wardrobe. A snug cashmere coat will last a lifetime so why not invest in something like Loewe’s oversized belted version. www.net-a-porter.com

Shaded Spruce

This evergreen hue falls somewhere between shady pines and deep forest and it’s particularly suited to luxurious fabrics like silk. Roksanda’s silk-twill tunic top has contrast orange and pale pink detailing, rounding off the autumnal palette perfectly. www.matchesfashion.com

Golden Lime

This mossy yellow-green hue isn’t the easiest to pull off but you can expect to see it everywhere in coming months. Aviu’s sparkling green top combines the fashionable shade with lots of festive season sequins. www.farfetch.com

Marina

Similar to a deep sky-blue, marina is the perfect shade for a statement coat. Off-White’s embellished crushed velvet puffer is a fresh combination of streetwear, utility and downright opulence. www.net-a-porter.com

Autumn Maple

The quintessential autumn shade, it’s an alluring mix of tawny and russet, kind of like a rusty orange. Vita Kin’s light-weight linen dress makes for an ideal layering piece in our unpredictable autumn climate. www.matchesfashion.com
