Leggings go large

Now here’s one we didn’t see coming, particularly after the epic demise of the skinny jean: leggings have made a bold return to the catwalks, and this season they’re more luxurious than ever.

While loads of Lycra may initially seem suited only to the legs of waif-like models and the petit, the AW17 collections have proved that leggings can be both versatile and flattering. Ditch those gym spandex and invest in a decent pair to reap the full rewards.

Fashion week taught us to layer them under dresses for a comfortable, streamlined get-up, or pair them with a long-line blazer or oversized coat to channel the effortless cool of an off-duty Nineties supermodel. And make sure you swap the trainers for this season’s must-have kitten heel or a chunky wedge for leg-lengthening benefits and the most flattering silhouette. Fail-safe black will serve you throughout the seasons and should be a staple in any wardrobe, but a bold colour or print can instantly lift any uninspiring outfit.

For smart and elegant style points take inspiration from Versace, who paired black leggings with super-slick tailored blazers at recent shows, making it all about the jacket.

Balenciaga showcased pinstriped pins on their models – perfect for complete comfort in the corporate world. Pair with a flowing blouse and blazer for guaranteed office admiration.

To make it all about the leggings, it’s hard to beat the bold-colour blocking and retro styling of No Ka’oi, as well as the designs of MM6 Maison Margiela. Pair with an oversized knit for casual chic and utmost comfort.

To liven up a flowing floral frock opt for an all-over bright hue with cleverly placed detailing to suck you in. We love A.F Vandevorst’s panelled leggings in brick red.
