5 progressive unisex and gender-neutral brands you need to know

Unisex doesn’t have to mean basic tees and baggy sweats. Here’s our favourite pioneering designers changing the fashion landscape forever.

Rad Hourani

The Canadian-Jordanian designer has been making waves in the gender non-conformist fashion world for a decade now. With a background in fine art and photography, his inimitable eye for clean lines and beauty is reflected in his blocky and bold unisex clothing collections. The crafty creator has also recently unveiled a new selection of on-brand unisex eyewear with an emphasis on futuristic, geometric shapes.

This season we are lusting over his epitomising monochromatic belted coats. All of them.

Too good

Designed by the aptly named Toogood sisters, Faye and Erica, this London-based brand offers thoroughly modern outerwear for all. Their innovative approach to fashion design is garnering global attention, as they collaborate with architects, product designers and painters to create hardwearing pieces that are both practical and sculptural. The sisters say that each garment takes inspiration from traditional workwear, transforming the rigid idea of a uniform into a mark of pure individuality.

We don’t care if the temperature is lingering around zero, these cropped “The Boxer Long Clay” trousers in stainless steel are everything.

69

As is perhaps hinted at in the name, 69 clothing is the perfect mix of naughty and nice. The designs offer lashings of quirkiness, with bold and often oversized silhouettes, yet each item is totally wearable. The LA-based fashion house describes itself as “timeless and classic yet made in our present and meant for the future,” – and we couldn’t have put it better ourselves!

This season we are pining after their pleated denim suit trousers.

One DNA

One DNA has made it their mission to dress the world, regardless of race, gender, age or sexual preference. Launched by New York-based designer Travis Weaver, the brand’s ethos centres around producing wearable unisex pieces inspired by both luxury fashion and sportswear.

This season’s ribbed, oversized hoody in camel is the perfect plush post-workout sweat. www.onedna.us

Rains

Often highly functional items aren’t the best looking, and raincoats can have you channelling both flashers and horror movie slashers.  But Danish outerwear brand, Rains, has everything you need to stay dry in our humdrum climate – minus the negative connotations. They offer a huge selection of unisex coats in an array flattering styles and up-to-the-minute colours so you can reap the benefits of Scandi styling that’s 100% waterproof.

Their belted Curve Jacket is the ideal silhouette for him or her, and it’s now available in an uber en vogue shade of rust.
