The 26th of October marks the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, known to some as the October Revolution or Red October. One of the most important political events of the 20th Century, its effects are still being felt today. To commemorate the centenary, the Barbican is hosting a special, one-off screening of the iconic cinematic masterpiece, Sergei Eisenstein’s October – an epic recreation of these events that led up to the storming of the great Winter Palace in 1917.
The film was commissioned at the time to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Revolution.
It is all at once moving, highly personal and provocative – its propagandist imagery led to widespread bans, with it first shown to British audiences only in 1935.
The screening will feature a live score performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, while proceeds will go to the Kino Klassika Foundation, a UK charity that supports the restoration and presentation of classic Russian-language cinema.
The event will be presented by the foundation’s director and trustee, Justine Waddell. An acclaimed film and stage actress, Justine played the lead in Vladimir Sorokin and Alexander Zeldovich’s sci-fi version of Anna Karenina, Target, for which she learnt the Russian language from scratch.
